Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a gentle and effective tool for treating everything from trauma and addiction to anxiety, depression, and physical discomfort. Taught to patients at The Meadows in combination with expressive arts therapy, EFT provides a way to balance the body’s energies. After using this method, most patients report that their discomfort levels have significantly decreased.
How Does It Work?
EFT is based on the theory that disruptions in the body’s energy system cause disturbing emotions. This easy-to-learn therapy involves gently tapping on certain points of the body while focusing on the problem causing those disturbing emotions. This relieves distress by leaving the memory of the problem behind while eliminating the emotional charge that comes with it. As the patient removes the emotional response to the memory, the result brings positive changes in thinking.
As part of group work, each patient at The Meadows creates a visual map of the body. They then label and rate the areas of discomfort while using EFT to focus on these areas. Useful far beyond the bounds of inpatient treatment, this therapy is ideal for self-help, allowing patients to self-regulate and manage triggers in the future.
