Psychologist C.G. Jung once referred to shame as “the swampland of the soul.” It’s a dark place we all have within us to varying degrees. It is full of the negative ideas we have about our own self-worth. Mp> Although shame can sometimes be a useful emotion—it can help us avoid damaging our relationships and motivate us to make them better—when it takes over a large part of your core being, it prevents you from connecting with others and from reaching your full potential.
In her 2012 Ted Talk, renowned researcher Dr. Brené Brown said that life is about overcoming shame, daring greatly, and “being in the arena,” a metaphor she borrowed from Teddy Roosevelt’s famous speech Citizenship In a Republic. She says, “When you walk up to the arena, and you put your hand on the door and you think to yourself, ‘I’m gonna try this,’ shame is the gremlin who says, ‘Uh-uh. You’re not good enough.”
In order to free yourself from shame and the idea that you are not good enough, you have to take a look at the stories you’ve created about yourself and create new ones. In order to do this, you have to begin to work through the trauma and pain from which your shame originated.
The Daring Way™ Workshop at The Meadows
The Daring Way™ workshop is based on Dr. Brené Brown’s 14 years of grounded theory and is designed to help you free yourself from excessive shame and overcome the barriers that are preventing you from living whole-heartedly.
Under the guidance of a Certified Daring Way™ and Certified Rising Strong facilitator, you will be invited to examine the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are holding you back and identify new choices and practices that will move you toward more authentic and wholehearted living. You will also develop shame resilience skills and cultivate daily practices that transform the way you live, love, parent, and lead.
During the five-day intensive experience, you will also…
- Learn how to have courage in your life to build relationships and increase connection.
- Understand the power of vulnerability, which Brené Brown calls “the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, accountability, and authenticity.”
- Learn what empathy really is and how to practice it.
- Learn how to have more compassion toward yourself.
