Listen to This Conversation on Empathy and Addiction

By Andrea Sauceda, Internet and Social Media Director at The Meadows

In these times of complex debates, high stress, and anxiety--when we're constantly reading the news and watching the news and thinking about the news and arguing about the news - it can be nice to take a break and get back to basics for a bit: Like, to the basics of human emotion and behavior.

  • Why do we make the choices that we make?
  • Why do we sometimes unconsciously follow patterns of behavior that hurt us and everyone around us?

The latest episode of Mental Health News Radio, titled "Do Addicts Have Too Much Empathy?" doesn't have all the answers, but it gives us a lot to think about. The framework for the conversation is empathy and addiction, but really, there's stuff here that anyone might find useful:

  • When can empathy actually harm you, rather than serve you?
  • How do you set up your own internal checks and balances to make sure you aren't using empathy to manipulate and control?

The episode features Dr. Kevin McCauley and Dan Griffin, both Senior Fellows at The Meadows, and Kristin Walker, host of Mental Health News Radio and CEO of Everything EHR. Take a break from the cable news networks and your Facebook feed for an hour and listen to this instead. You won't regret it.
