The Meadows was proud to be a major contributing sponsor of The US Journal Conference on Trauma, Addiction, Intimacy Disorders held in Nashville May 7-9, 2014. This event attracted more than 350 Clinical Professionals from the Southeast, Midwest and East Regions. Many conference participants were reportedly in attendance specifically to hear featured presenters Bessel van der Kolk, MD and Claudia Black, Ph.D., MSW, world-renowned experts who are thought leaders in their disciplines and Senior Fellows of The Meadows.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk opened the conference with his keynote presentation titled The Body Knows the Score. His lecture explored important questions regarding trauma and its effects on individuals who have traumatic experiences, as well as those around them. Dr. van der Kolk also examined the progression of trauma in the brain and the behaviors typical of a traumatized person.

Dr. Claudia Black gave two outstanding presentations. In her lecture The Addictive Family: The Legacy of Trauma Dr. Black presented a detailed portrait of addiction in the family and offered an overlay of how adverse child experiences, emotional abandonment and blatant violence are all aspects of trauma. Dr. Black’s second presentation Intimate Treason: Healing the Trauma for Partners Confronting Sexual Addiction discussed the challenges men and women face when confronted by their partner’s sexual behaviors. In this presentation, Dr. Black outlined a three-part recovery focus offering the audience a treatment framework for the partner of a sex addict.

The Meadows has long been recognized for leading-edge trauma and addiction treatment. The Meadows as well as their specialty program for young adults, Dawn at The Meadows, integrate therapies such as Neurofeedback, DBT and Sensoimotor Psychotherapy into the treatment program for a holistic patient experience. Regarding these therapies, Dr. Van der Kolk stated, “I am so pleased that The Meadows is using these modalities because these types of treatment are what will help traumatized individuals to heal from their traumas.”

Business Development Liaisons Jenna Pastore and Peter Stavropoulos represented The Meadows Programs at this conference.
