The Meadows, experts in addiction and trauma treatment, is proud to co-sponsor the 2014 Southeast Conference on Trauma, Addiction, Intimacy Disorders. The Meadows Senior Fellows, Dr. Claudia Black and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk will both be making presentations to attendees. This conference will take place May 7-9, 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Program Focus

The Southeast Conference on Trauma, Addiction, Intimacy Disorders will address many of today’s most topical issues faced by professionals in the addiction and mental health fields. The Meadows Senior Fellows to Present at Conference

The Meadows treatment approach is guided with the help of their Senior Fellows, world-renowned experts and thought leaders in their disciplines such as Claudia Black, PhD and Bessel van der Kolk, MD. Both of these industry professionals will be presenting at this year’s Southeast Conference.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk

Dr. Bessel van der KolkClinical Consultant and a Senior Fellow at The Meadows, Bessel van der Kolk is one of the world’s foremost authorities on post traumatic stress disorders and other related disorders. He has been Medical Director of the Trauma Center in Boston for over 30 years. He is a professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and the Director of the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress Complex Trauma Network.

Dr. van der Kolk will present the lecture “The Body Knows The Score” during the conference. This lecture will explore important questions about trauma, how it affects people who have been through traumatic experiences, and how it affects those around them. It will also examine the progression of trauma in the brain and what behaviors are typical of traumatized persons. As part of this excellent study, Dr. van der Kolk will delve deep into multiple techniques for dealing with trauma. The range of treatments includes classical methods including therapy and more modern techniques that incorporate yoga, martial arts and more.

Additionally, Dr. van der Kolk is the conference director for the International Trauma Conference. The Meadows will be the sole sponsor of this year’s conference taking place in Boston, Massachusetts on May 28-31, 2014. The 25th Annual Conference theme is Psychological Trauma: Neuroscience, Attachment, and Therapeutic Interventions and will feature many of the most important contributors of our generation who will summarize their work related to the study of psychological trauma.

Dr. Claudia Black

Dr. Claudia BlackClaudia Black’s seminal work with children impacted by substance abuse in the late 1970s created the foundation for the adult child movement. Renowned author of over 15 books and a trainer internationally recognized for her pioneering and contemporary work with family systems and addictive disorders. She is a Senior Fellow and Addiction and Trauma Program Specialist at The Meadows and sits on the Advisory Board for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics and the Advisory Council of the Moyer Foundation.

Dr. Black will present “The Addictive Family: The Legacy of Trauma” which will give a portrait of addiction in the family, offering an overlay of how adverse child experiences, emotional abandonment and blatant violence are all aspects of trauma. She will also lecture on “Intimate Treason: Healing the Trauma for Partners Confronting Sexual Addiction.” Dr. Black will discuss the challenges partners of sexual addiction face and discuss a three-part recovery focus offering the audience a framework for treatment.
