The Meadows Dr. Jon Caldwell Awarded Research Grant

The Meadows is pleased to announce the awarding of a research grant from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) to The Meadows psychiatrist, Dr. Jon Caldwell.

At this year's annual ISTSS conference in Los Angeles California (November 1-3), Dr. Caldwell was one of only two recipients to be awarded this highly competitive research grant. His research proposal involves assessing the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based workshop for promoting attachment security in adult female survivors of child maltreatment.

In addition to his role as a full-time psychiatrist at The Meadows, Dr. Caldwell conducts research with his colleagues at the University of California at Davis regarding the effects of child maltreatment on attachment relationships and adult emotional/mental health.

"Mindfulness is an important part of many wisdom traditions and involves attending to the present moment with a quality of nonjudgmental acceptance," said Dr. Caldwell. "Research shows that the cultivation of mindfulness in every-day life can lead to better mental, emotional, and physical health. Also, mindfulness can enhance self-awareness and can enrich social relationships."

Dr. Caldwell is pioneering efforts to bring mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness-based techniques to people who have experienced trauma as a way of helping them better regulate their emotions and experience greater satisfaction in their close relationships. He has designed a three-day mindfulness-based workshop aimed at healing past and present wounds related to relational trauma. This free workshop will be offered to female volunteers who are willing to be part of the research study. There will be two dates offered for the workshop, both occurring in the spring of 2013. More details regarding this unique opportunity will be announced in the coming months. Please stay-tuned for those details and join us in congratulating Dr. Jon Caldwell on his accomplishment!
