Even though approximately 70 percent of the people that go through treatment annually are men, the majority of professionals have not been trained to effectively work with men. Furthermore, men and women experience, respond to, exhibit the symptoms of, and recover from trauma differently. Therefore, the interventions and treatment services we provide to men must also be different. Many treatment professionals may be unintentionally re-traumatizing male participants, thereby increasing their risk of failure in the program. This three-day professional development workshop offers practical guidance and tools for professionals working with men in navigating these challenging areas.

Please note: This workshop provides a space for behavioral health professionals to do their personal healing alongside their peers. In addition to the personal benefits you gain from the workshop, you will also gain a deeper understanding of best practices for working with men in a treatment setting. It is not, however, training on how to conduct the workshop itself.

Testimonials

“As someone who works with men, specifically fathers in recovery, on a regular basis, Dan’s work has directly impacted how I provide treatment to my clients. Using the Helping Men Recover treatment program, an understanding of gender-informed treatment and trauma-informed care specifically geared towards men has greatly improved my effectiveness at reaching the men I work with. I see them understanding themselves better, improving their relationships, and experiencing better outcomes in their recovery.”

“Dan's workshop is a transformative experience that deeply challenged and expanded my beliefs on what it means to be a man. Over the course of three days, I laughed, I cried, and I discovered some of the deeply hidden wounds that I would have sworn didn't exist just a few days earlier. “

"Our Division, Behavioral Health Services, felt we were gender neutral. After attending Dan’s training, we conducted a walkthrough of our organization: we realized we weren't. This is one aspect of the power of understanding the Man Rules. Dan opened our minds to see our male clients from a different perspective, and our organization became more welcome to our male guests."

Learning Objectives

During this training, participants will:

  1. Gain an understanding of the core theories of this new framework for treatment for men.
  2. Gain an understanding of how a male-responsive trauma-informed care system differs from a traditional trauma-informed care system that was traditionally developed for women.
  3. Gain an understanding of how the four core areas of Self, Relationships, Sexuality, and Spirituality impact a man’s recovery and key issues within each core area.
  4. Be able to understand trauma as a defining and organizing experience that forms a recovering person’s sense of self and others.
  5. Have a greater understanding of the way that men experience, process, and exhibit trauma.
  6. Leave with exercises and practices to incorporate immediately into their work with men in addiction treatment programs.
  7. Have a greater understanding of how our personal healing work greatly impacts our ability to help men in their own healing journey.

About The Facilitator

Dan Griffin, MA, Senior Fellow of The Meadows, has dedicated his work and life to exploring and redefining what it means to be a man in the 21st century. Dan is dedicated to helping men be better men by understanding the impact of the Man Rules on their lives and finding the success in their personal lives they are striving for in the professional lives. Griffin’s newest book, A Man’s Way through Relationships, is the first book written specifically to help men create healthy relationships while navigating the challenges of the “Man Rules™,” those ideas men internalize at very young ages about how to be real boys and men. Griffin has worked in the mental health and addictions field for more than 20 years. He is the author of A Man’s Way through the Twelve Steps, the first trauma-informed book to take a holistic look at men’s sobriety. He also co-authored Helping Men Recover, the first comprehensive gender-responsive and trauma-informed curriculum for addiction and mental health professionals. He earned a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Kansas where his graduate work was the first qualitative study centered on the social construction of masculinity in the culture of Alcoholics Anonymous.
