PTSD

Do you experience sudden, unprovoked, and disturbing memory flashbacks? Perhaps you find yourself having repeated nightmares and needing to have the lights on when you go to sleep. Are you very sensitive about your environment, feelings, and surroundings? If so, you may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

An anxiety disorder that stems from a life-threatening event or psychological trauma, PTSD can manifest in nightmares, intense remembrances of the event, challenges in falling or staying asleep, feelings of unreasonable anger, and constant edginess. Sufferers often avoid situations that may produce thoughts or recollections of the traumatic event.

PTSD often is associated with soldiers or police officers involved in life-threatening situations, but the disorder can be triggered by any overwhelming experience. Chances for developing it are greatest if the incident is extreme, long-lasting, or repeated over time. Premeditated, human-inflicted trauma, such as rape or physical attack, tends to be more disturbing than more impersonal accidents and disasters. The level to which the distressing incident was unforeseen and out of a person’s control also plays a role.

The fear felt during such traumatic events can have lifelong consequences. Not only do individuals silently suffer with PTSD, they may also seek to minimize its effects through self-destructive activities, medicating traumatic memories with drugs, alcohol, food, or sexual behaviors. Those who have experienced such an event can benefit from seeking help.

At The Meadows Arizona, clients are invited to recollect and share the emotions and sensations they experienced during the initial and/or subsequent events. World-renowned experts in treating psychological trauma guide each patient through a safe and effective process of uncovering and processing any issues related to trauma and PTSD.
