EMDR

The Meadows is internationally renowned for its use of state-of-the-art methodologies to treat unresolved emotional trauma. Among these, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, also known as EMDR, is a particularly effective therapy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When used in conjunction with The Meadows’ Developmental Immaturity Model, EMDR can minimize or eliminate psychological trauma. The technique changes the way the brain’s limbic system and prefrontal cortex work when the patient is triggered via external stimuli. In many people, survival reactions are triggered for brief bursts only; for those who suffer from chronic trauma symptoms, however, the fight/flight/freeze reaction leaves issues unresolved. Talk therapy alone is usually insufficient to solve these problems. However, nearly all patients who participate in EMDR therapy report greater general wellness and significant decreases in trauma-related symptoms.

EMDR therapy normally requires the use of some type of sensory input. For example, a patient may experience bi-lateral stimulation while watching the lights on a light bar, feeling a faint tingling from two hand-held devices, and/or hearing a number of sounds through earphones. The physical sensory input rapidly alternates between the left and right sides; as patients are subject to these sensations, they recall certain facets of their trauma. While memories of those distressing occasions remain, the client’s physical and emotional responses to those traumas begin to dissipate. A number of studies on EMDR indicate that it is effective and safe when administered by trained professionals.

Due to our staff’s expertise in administrating EMDR, particularly in the treatment of psychological trauma, The Meadows has accepted clients from many rehab centers. To learn more about this innovative therapy, and how it may be useful in your treatment, contact the Meadows at .
