Art Therapy
- Watch Our Video: Family Systems
One of the many distinguishing characteristics of The Meadows is its focus on the holistic healing of body, mind, and spirit. It complements traditional therapeutic methods with up-to-date creative processes, including an art therapy program that encourages clients to express themselves through a variety of activities. Assisting clients on a personal journey of discovery and expression, art therapy has long been an effective tool at The Meadows rehab facilities in Arizona.
The staff at The Meadows believes that embedding art into therapy has several important advantages for patients:
- When patients have the freedom to express themselves in a creative, unstructured way, it aids in both the discovery and disclosure of inner feelings — an important part of healing. After each session, an art therapist looks at each piece of art with the patient. Discussing the issues embedded in the works can help clients identify deep or hidden feelings, as well as assist them in processing these issues for possible resolution.
- When clients can connect their feelings to a symbolic representation of those feelings, it allows them a freedom of expression that is often more comfortable and insightful than expressing emotions verbally. When patients find art therapy to be a comfortable form of communication, they are better able to share perceptions not normally expressed through other therapy methods
- Through a somewhat structured self-exploration, art therapy sessions can help patients process what they learn during group sessions

One of the goals of The Meadows’ treatment program is to ensure that all patients have the tools they need on their path to healing and recovery. Keep in mind: The Meadows’ art therapy sessions are not only for “artists.” In fact, art therapy is so rewarding because of the insights the typical non-artist discovers in the process. The masterpiece is not the final product; it is what we are able to recognize and realize about ourselves in this simple yet profound exercise. To learn more about The Meadows’ art therapy program, call
