Alcohol Addiction

Have you ever experienced the loss of hours or days after being under the influence of alcohol? Have you been charged with a DUI — or a repeat DUI within a short time frame? After a night of drinking, do you recognize in the morning that, once again, you’re hungover? If so, you may be addicted to alcohol.

Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, is defined as the obsessive and unmanageable use of alcohol, regardless of its negative impact on the drinker’s fitness, profession, and associations. Long-term alcohol addiction can destroy emotions and lives.
At The Meadows, we treat all phases of alcohol addiction, from detoxification to our primary treatment program that builds foundations for long-term abstinence and sobriety.

Alcoholism causes physical and intellectual chaos that influences every aspect of life. Overcoming this obsession requires making changes in the way one lives, faces problems, and relates to others. When one drinks to excess, the body becomes dependent on alcohol and experiences withdrawal symptoms if it is removed without warning. Basic signs of alcohol withdrawal include headache, tremors, sweating, a racing heart rate, high blood pressure, upset stomach, increased anxiety, impatience, stomach pain and/or loose stools, difficulty sleeping, and trouble focusing.

A variety of mental health problems also can be caused by long-term alcohol use. Most individuals addicted to alcohol suffer from some form of severe psychiatric chaos marked by increased anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, alcohol-induced psychosis, panic disorders, and other symptoms. Alcohol abuse is considered the second-leading cause of dementia, as it relates to 10 percent of diagnosed cases. Extreme alcohol use can cause harm to brain functioning, which, if not treated, can be permanent.

Recovery from alcohol addiction may not seem possible, but it is. If a person admits to having a problem, he or she has started down the path of recovery. Many clients trust The Meadows’ alcohol-treatment program to help them begin their journey toward sobriety
